Soundtrack CDs / LPs / MCs
1980s mystery tracks from Varese Sarbande archives
Please listen and help me identify some tracks!
Updated February 12, 2009:
No additions this time but electronic score fans might check out the
added info on Michael Boddicker's "8th Dimension" track on the
"Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai". I have finally identified this track
as Boddicker's score from the SIGGRAPH 1984 collage film "The Magic Egg".
Updated February 17, 2008 - long time no see dee...
(As collecting antique books has kind of taken the upper hand,
CD updates have become farther between. But I'm still here!)

This is a list of my original soundtracks. (Scroll down for the list).
It constitutes about half of my entire record collection (which is almost
3000 items). The rest of the list (non-soundtrack CDs, LPs, singles &
cassettes) is not yet published on the web. (mostly 1980s pop/rock,
jazz/fusion, new age and a few classical...)
This is not a "for sale list". It is just my personal collection, which I
decided to put on the web for anyone (un)interested, cheesy or not :-).
A few of my originals are for trade/sale though. (I haven't had the time
to write a separate "for sale list", so you'll have to ask).
I am not a "bootlegger" or seller of illegal CDs or CD-Rs though.
But when it comes to score music that has never been released commercially
(because no record company showed any interest in it), there are many
collecting fans who are conducting trades over the internet, disappointed
of record companies that too often treat quality score music badly. In
those cases no one is losing money on it being traded by dedicated listeners.
In fact I think everyone could benefit. The listeners, the composers and
even the record companies, since the interest for the music spreads.
I don't particularly sympathize with bootlegging. I only wish record
companies would counteract it by releasing more instrumental film music.
Until then, sadly, sometimes unofficial copies remain the only chance to
hear some of the best music composed.
I would encourage everyone to go out and buy the soundtracks you like, but
don't be fooled by the "songs inspired from" rip-offs! The bigger the
interest in scores, the more will hopefully be released. It's a small
niche, which makes it hard to make a profit. Unlike much pop stuff of
today, the more specialized movie music record labels (like Varèse
Sarabande, Milan & Intrada) can really need & deserve the
money, due to their low margins... I practice what I'm preaching,
as you can see from my list. In many cases though, the music has
never been released officially to the public and we'll have to stick to
CD-Rs if we're ever going to hear it! I hope I'm helping to spread some
knowledge through this list. (Even if there are many collectors out there
with incomparably more hard to find stuff.)

Before emailing me about soundtracks: I receive a lot of
questions and requests.
I always try to answer every message (I like to help out), but if it takes
weeks and still no reply, please remind me!
The only reason you didn't get a reply is that I forgot it among other
mail, no hard feelings. With that in mind, just send a note.
For those of you who use to trade rare unreleased score material,
please read my tutorial
How to make click-free CD copies.
Also read the disclaimer at the bottom of that page - commercial CDs
should not be pirated.
A list of (almost) all soundtracks released through 1999
is here (more than 7000 soundtracks)!
That is the searchable list previously maintained at www.filmmusic.com but now gone from that site.

Note: "..." means various artists (songs), in most cases.
Names in parenthesis denotes featured famous musicians/soloists. In some
cases I have investigated this myself, while nothing is said on the soundtrack.

John's utopian want list
For the most part, the scores below are unreleased on album. It's a
culture crime that the some of the best instrumental music of the
20th century by world-class composers and musicians remains
locked in the vaults. An enormous talent is evident in all these, but
apparently there's no correlation between talent and fame/sales. I've
tried to highlight some clever musical details in short descriptions.
(I have a lot of theories about the situation for quality music but
I won't bore you with them here).
TV station ID / news music packages by
Shelly Palmer, Frank Gari, Edd Kalehoff etc.
Michael Boddicker: anything unreleased, like:
Buckaroo Banzai (1984) (A milestone of electronic scores.
Yup, there are boots but isn't it about time for a real release?)
White Water Summer (1987)
F/X 2 (1991) (Lalo Schifrin, + Gary Stockdale?)
Norton Buffalo: Stacy's Knights (1982)
(Irresistibly groovy, richly melodic dated score for
early Kevin Costner film)
Ralph Burns: Perfect (1985) (and anything else, too little available)
Alf Clausen: Number One with a Bullet (1987)
Vladimir Cosma: Chateauvallon (French TV series)
(Cosma Cinéma Collection Vol. 16: Chateauvallon, Pomme Music 950302)
Barry De Vorzon & Joseph Conlan: Stick (1985)
James Di Pasquale: Listen To Your Heart (1983)
(incl. upbeat disco source music)
Bill Meyers & James Di Pasquale: Armed and Dangerous (1986)
John Du Prez: Oxford Blues (1984)
Dave Edmunds (+ Michael Shrieve): Porky's Revenge (1985) (all but one of Edmunds' album tracks are formulaic rock but the "Faltermeyeresque" DX-7 (?) synth score remains unreleased)
Jonathan Elias: Blue Jean Cop / Shakedown (1988)
Two Moon Junction (1988) (more score not on the album, notably a distinct bassline)
Gil Goldstein: Simply Irresistible (1999)
(incl. rousing romantic big-band ballroom music)
Dave Grusin: anything unreleased displaying Grusin's unique melodic
catchiness, especially:
Tequila Sunrise (1988)
Ishtar (1987)
Absence of Malice (1981)
...And Justice For All (1979)
The Goodbye Girl (1977)
Marvin Hamlisch:
D.A.R.Y.L. (1985)
(dynamic leitmotif summarized by emotional theme song)
Seems Like Old Times (1980)
(entertaining turn-of-the-decade disco feast)
David A. Hughes & John Murphy: The Real Howard Spitz (1998)
(witty, tongue-in-cheek comedy music)
Jerrold Immel:
How the West Was Won (Featuring the Family Macahan) (1979)
Dallas etc..
James Horner: Commando (1985)
(feat. Jay Gruska & Steve Tavaglione) (Varese club CD)
Alaric Jans: House of Games (1987) (intimate jazz suspense)
Trevor Jones: True Colors (1991) (electronic score)
Laura Karpman: The Break-up (1998) (unique instrumentation & sound design, great strings)
Michel Legrand: Best Friends (1982) (apparently unreleased apart from "How Do You Keep The Music Playing" released as a single?)
Richard Lewis Warren: any 80s TV score, especially:
Remington Steele
(Apart from Henry Mancini's classy themes, Warren displayed
an impressive range of styles)
Geoff MacCormack & Simon Goldenberg aka Paradise UK aka Praise:
Wild Orchid (1990) (innovative electronic music,
badly represented on soundtrack CD)
Johnny Mandel: The Baltimore Bullet (1980)
(admittedly a "Condor" Grusin travesty with wild pop arrangement and
jazz changes, woodwind solo over sneaking diminished string line)
Michael Masser / Tom Scott: Stir Crazy (1980)
(many styles, daring for a comedy score. Distinct three-note
minor-key suspense motif intelligently segues into theme song verse)
Greg Mathieson & Lee Ritenour: American Flyers (CD only, I have the LP)
(According to Greg Mathieson, it was released also on CD, he has it himself.
According to hearsay, this (GRP?) CD was only released in Japan.)
Giorgio Moroder: unreleased film versions of scores not on album,
especially:
Midnight Express (original end titles with full-blown
orchestral textures - remixed to lame disco for the album)
Stanley Myers: The Boost (1988) (more complete than the short bootleg)
James Newton Howard: 8 Million Ways To Die (1986)
(early electronic JNH score)
Laurence Rosenthal: In The Line Of Duty - The FBI Murders (1988)
(electronic score, fascinating school book example of leitmotif
bending & stretching)
Brotherhood of the Rose (1988) (electronic score)
The Wild Party (1975)
(bluegrass song theme reappears as dissonant string delirium)
Michel Rubini: Moving Target (1988) (electronic 80s pop score)
Jeremy Sams: The Mother (2003) (Intelligent Grusin-like low-key piano harmonies)
Lalo Schifrin & Paul Gilreath / Gary Stockdale: Black Moon Rising (1986)
(electronics sound peculiarly un-Schifrin, courtesy of Gilreath)
Alan Silvestri: anything unreleased that I don't have, like:
She's Out Of Control
No Mercy (more score not on the album)
Mark Snow:
TJ Hooker
Hart To Hart
Murder by the Book (1987)
David A. Stewart: Showgirls (1995) (Score! Only one track is on the album)
Vangelis: 2001 Sydney Olympics closing ceremony (14 minutes)
Twilight / Kurzweil music systems (?): Beyond 2000 (c:a 1985 Australian TV theme)
(extremely thematic 80s TV theme)
Plus anything rare by:
Michel Colombier
Bill Conti
Harold Faltermeyer
Jay Ferguson (note: Bad Dreams VCD-70456 (1988) was apparently never released on CD)
Brad Fiedel
Charles Fox
David Michael Frank
Miles Goodman (only a handful were released before his untimely passing)
Sylvester Levay
Henry Mancini
Mike Post
Electronic scores from the 1980s in general...
TV scores from the 1980s... (the situation for TV scores on disc
is depressing compared to big-screen scores. Why is small-screen music
doomed to deterioration in the vaults?)

Michael Boddicker Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai (1984)
/ Elmer Bernstein / Saturn 3 (1979)
The 13-minute track "The 8th Dimension" is NOT from Buckaroo Banzai.
In fact, it is Boddicker's score for "The Magic Egg" -
a computer-animated video collage of contributions from the
annual computer graphics conference SIGGRAPH 1984!
A shortened outtake from this creative musical journey was available
on a "soundpage" (flexidisc) from Keyboard Magazine in the 80s.
I have suspected this for several years but my research was
unsuccessful until I finally located someone who actually had the
flexidisc in possession, who could compare the music for me.
Remember where you saw it first! :-)
The Motorcycle Chase track also appears in a different version
on a 1986 TDK / En Pointe CD called "Joyride" featuring
Vinnie Colaiuta, Nathan East & Scott Shelly + Boddicker on
synths (Emulator 1, Jupiter 6 & 8, PPG with Waveterm,
Mini Moog, Simmons & LM 1 Drum Machine)
IMO, Buckaroo Banzai is a milestone of synth scores.
Michael Boddicker (1tr), various Get Crazy (1983) (LP + video transfer) CD-R
Note: Boddicker's "Starscape" track is actually the same as the craziest
Buckaroo Banzai track which included Star Spangled Banner, only
this time with crowd noises added which makes it even crazier.

Alan Silvestri Blown Away / Fandango (1994 / 1985) (bootleg 1998)
Please note that some of the best tracks of Fandango are not
included on this CD! Notably the less orchestral modern cues
with synthesizer, guitar & saxophone. The sound quality of
Fandango is very bad. The newer version sourced from Silvestri's
tape makes this version obsolete!

Funny Face - various (Soichi Noriki, Anli Sugano, The Jazztet / Art Farmer) - YCD-8401
Early 1983 Eastworld / Yamaha demo CD marked "not for sale" and
announcing "Yamaha hi quality sound" on the tasteful cover.
Produced by Live Co., Ltd., Nippon Gakki Co., Ltd., Hamamatsu, Japan
Japanese session musician/producer Noriki has three excellent
instrumental jazz-fusion tracks (with a preference for
Yamaha keyboards, as the booklet points out).
Non-soundtrack listed here since it might just be the rarest CD I have.
(With Teruo Nakamura's "Super Friends" tying for second place).
For 10 years I could find no references to this disc.
Now someone has atleast added it to TagTuner.com's database:

16 Days of Glory: The Spirit of the Olympics (Lee Holdridge etc?)
(Delta Music / Laserlight 12 760, 1996)
Soundtrack from "16 Days of Glory" - A Paramount picture
Music from Los Angles 1984, Calgary 1988, Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992, Lillehammer 1994.
Featuring Placido Domingo in "Hymn of the Nations" (music: Giuseppe Verdi, this version lyrics: Dominique Mancinelli-Merrill)
No composer credits are printed. IMDB and Holdridge's website credit him
to the "Glory" movies. However, some post-1984 tracks sound more like
synth production music. I assume some tracks were just stock music?
However, amazingly, the 1984 LP jacket for the first movie's soundtrack says:
"Synthesizer built and played by Michael Boddicker."

If anyone reading this has Vangelis's 14 minutes of music from
the 2001 Sydney olympics closing ceremony, please contact me!
If anyone has any other "sports event" albums that
I'm missing, drop me a note!
I'm looking for "production music CDs" that have
been used in such events. I can strongly recommend the
"International Event" CD below which is nothing short of
spectacular, but I'm trying to find lots more.
Production Music library CDs
I'm constantly looking for other library CDs & LPs. If you can help,
please contact me. I'm especially looking for old "elevator music" from
the 1970s (it seems most of it was never re-released on CD), and
"news" and "sports" music from the 80s, and lots and lots of other things.
I would very much like to find station ID / news music packages like
Shelly Palmer, Frank Gari, Edd Kalehoff etc... Any help appreciated!
Since it's hard to have a "relation" to any of these CDs, I'm writing
one-sentence "reviews" for these albums. The plan is to expand this
to all CDs eventually.
If you are one of the musicians and feel misrepresented in my comment,
please don't get sour on me. I'm sure you're all highly talented,
and realize that a lot of this music is required to be molded to fit for
a particular purpose. If I wrote something bad about a CD it doesn't mean
I hate everything you do! I'm very excited to have found all of these
discs. :-)
(Sorry for bad ordering, it's difficult to decide which way to sort this list.
I'm trying to sort by composer, style, quality and label - all at once!)
International Event (1991) Rouge Music RMCD 2011 "Contemporary sports music"
1-12 by Justin Myers & Hywel Maggs
13-26 by Simon Park
My comment: Myers/Maggs material is phenomenal. This thematic powerful synth rock rivals anything Hans Zimmer or Vince DiCola ever did! 11/10!
This CD rocked my world to the point where I felt I had to make a
"tribute page" about it to help
pull it out of the shadows.
(Eternal thanks to Hywel Maggs for sending me the below 3. You have a fan here!)
Justin Myers / Hywel Maggs: Guitar Heroes (1993) Rouge Music RMCD 2016 "A survey of Electric and Acoustic Guitar styles"
Justin Myers / Hywel Maggs: Hopes 'n' Dreams (1996) Rouge Music RMCD 2022 "Contemporary music for Holidays and Relaxation with a New Age feel"
Justin Myers / Hywel Maggs & Elfed Hayes: Fashion Victim (2000) Rouge Music RMCD 2032 "The World of the Supermodel"
My comment: Maggs/Myers make some of the best production music I've heard.
Carlo Cordio: World In Action (1988) Primrose Music PRCD 023 "Action - pursuits - emotions, energetic rock and lively funky for orchestra"
My comment: Really good! (A bit cheesy). Very melodic, very funky, VERY 80s. Carlo Cordio is an Italian film composer
Paul Hardcastle: Smooth Jazz Funk Carlin Music (My comment: yes, it's a completely unknown album by THE Paul Hardcastle)
Various: The Sports Machine (1991) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0125 "Fast, effective music for sport and motion"
(tracks 1-10 by Douglas Hubbard, 11-13 by Mark Steeds, 14-24 by David Molyneux)
My comment: Rhythmical, tough. Pretty simple compositions. Somewhat clumsy production. 6/10
Chris Evans-Ironside: Winners (1989) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0057 "Exciting modern orchestral pieces, with keyboard versions suitable for action, sport and prestige."
My comment: Good synth+orchestra combination, nice synth drums, grand, exciting. 8/10

Martin Price & Simon Foster: Signature Tunes And Stings (1994) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0178 "A collection of themes and stings incorporating commercial lengths and index points"

Mike O'Donnell & Richard Thomas: Orchestral Innovations (1996) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0196 "Creative contemporary themes depicting global interaction - with promo loops, commercial lengths and stings"
My comment: Good, grand, orchestral. (Partly synth, partly classical style). 7/10
John Mealing: Talking Heads (1988) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0049 "Large orchestral themes with underscores and commercial lengths for current affairs, sport and achievement"
My comment: Big, fat, bossy "CNN music", typical news score with heavy string orchestra.
I would call this "music for CEOs and war correspondents." 8/10
Simon Park: News and Views (1993) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0163 "Current affairs, politics and sport"
My comment: A bit "light weight", rather typical but nice, poppy. Perhaps somewhat better than Park's International Event tracks? 7/10
Simon Park: Incentives (1988) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0051 "Large orchestral pieces for current affairs, news and industry with underscores and commercial lengths"
Simon Park: State of the Nation (1990) Rouge Music RMCD 2008 "Modern orchestral pieces with commercial lengths and underscores for prestige and achievement"
My comment: Grand synth/orchestra combination. Melodious, dramatic. 7-8/10
Simon Park: On the Up (1990) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0108 "Bright, positive music, with Commercial Lengths, for Small Group with a Pop or Rock feel."
My comment: Elegant, melodic keyboard based contemporary pop/jazz-fusion that feels alive and fresh. Probably the best of the Simon Park CDs I have so far. 8/10
Andy Quin: Mirage (1985) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0001 "Bright, modern, innovative sounds for action, sport and industry featuring the Fairlight Computer Musical Instrument"
My comment: Though this seems promising, most of Quin's old material sounds too plastic and dated, not interesting.
Andy Quin: Touch of a Button (1985) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0010 "Colourful, energetic themes played on the fairlight computer musical instrument"
Andy Quin: Videotronics Two (1987) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0019 "Dynamic, prestigious music suitable for audio visual and video production."
Andy Quin: Prime Cuts vol. 1 (1987) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0026 "A selection of short pieces for commercials with and without sound effects for small group"
My comment: pretty silly)
Andy Quin: Charting Success (1989) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0047 "Bright, optimistic orchestral pieces with small group versions and commercial lengths"
My comment: Nice production music. From easy listening to grand, many live instruments, partly orchestral.
Amusing flute gives track 2 a distinct library music feel like nothing else! :-)
Track 4 the smoothest supper-club bossa ballad I've heard. 7-8/10
Andy Quin: The Time Is Now (1989) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0064 "Modern electronic keyboard music for corporate and prestige usage"
My comment: Synth-poppy, melodic but develops a bit too slow. OK. 7/10
Andy Quin: Inside Report (1994) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0165 "Music for magazine programmes, current affairs and corporate issues"
My comment: Dramatic, electronic, easily forgotten melodies. Partly "clattering". 6/10
David Hubbard: Sports and Power Promo's (1994) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0172 "Dynamic energy for powerplays"
My comment: Uninteresting, partly tiresome. Best: 46, "Eurosport". 3/10
Douglas Hubbard: City Pulse (1990) Rouge Music RMCD 2009 "Corporate and industrial music for keyboards in a contemporary style"
My comment: Machine-like, monotone. 4-5/10
Douglas Hubbard: Countdown (1989) Rouge Music RMCD 2007 "Sounds for sport and action"
My comment: Partly clumsy production, shallow melodies. Electronic sound. 6/10
Douglas Hubbard: High Stakes (1988) Rouge Music RMCD 2001 "Contemporary themes for electronic keyboards and sampling machines with underscores, stings and commercial lengths", Keyboards / contemporary
My comment: Slow, electronic. OK production if however a bit synthetic. 4/10
Colin Kiddy: Achievers (1989) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0048 "Optimistic, exciting pieces for electronic keyboards, with underscores and commercial lengths, with a corporate feel."
Colin Kiddy: Achievers 2 (1995) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0184 "Powerful dynamic themes, including commercial lengths and stings"
My comment: Well produced, electronic, forcefull. 7/10
Colin Kiddy: Solutions (1990) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0098 "Dynamic keyboard music with a corporate feel"
Chris Evans-Ironside: Multiple Image (1988) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0029 "Interesting colourful electronic keyboard music for audio visual production"
My comment: Synthish, a bit plastic but OK. IMO better than some of the Andy Quin synth CDs. 6/10
Anthony Hobson / Trevor Bastow: Silicon Valley (1987) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0023 "A look at the world of technology featuring electronic keyboards"
Anthony Hobson: Within Range (1985) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0011 "Modern orchestral themes with commercial lengths and variations played by the International Television Orchestra. Vocal identification is included for ease of selection"
My comment: Good orchestra/synth blending, well produced. Cooling, soothing music for night listening.
Nice high strings (a Hobson trademark?), good melodies. Clumsy track separation. 8/10
Anthony Hobson: Facets (1986) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0014 "Modern orchestral and synthesized pieces for titles, industry and achievement"
My comment: Thematic orchestra/synth. Good melodies, more "grand" than Within Range. Partly "news" style. 8/10
John Collins / Mark Harrison: Lifestyle (1988) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0031 "Modern small group music featuring saxophone, keyboards and guitar for leisure and city life."
Compiled from DWS/LP 3597 - Lifestyle & DWS/LP 3555 - Moving Air
My comment: Nice, easy-going, synth produced, somewhat shallow & dated. 6/10
Simon May: Situations (1989) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0063 "A wide selection of music in different styles, general situations"
My comment: Easygoing but partly boring. So-so production. Some good melodies. The classy cover by Julian Puckett might be the best feature. 5/10
Booklet has a composer biography:
Of his recent work, perhaps Simon May is most known for writing the themes to EASTENDERS
and HOWARD's WAY, both of which won the TRIC Awards for TV Theme Music of the Year in
1986 and 1987. EASTENDERS was also nominated for the IVOR NOVELLO best TV Theme and in
the following year the number 1 million selling single EVERY LOSER WINS by NICK BERRY went
on to win the IVOR NOVELLO AWARD for best selling song of the year which Simon co-wrote/produced.
As well as concentrating on writing music for television (other TV themes include EVERYMAN,
SKORPION, COLD WARRIOR, HOLIDAY '86, PEOPLE (all for BBC TV), EMERGENCY 999 (TVS),
THE ROXY (Tyne Tees), and the ITV Olympics Theme (Thames TV), Simon's writing and
producing has resulted in the sale of over 8 million record during his career in the music
business (and this does not include cover recordings of his music, like the new versions of
EASTENDERS and HOWARD'S WAY by THE SHADOWS and RICHARD CLAYDERMAN, and songs recorded by
artistes like RUBY TURNER, THE POINTER SISTERS, JONATHAN BUTLER and AL JARREAU).
Much of Simon's writing has been solo, as for example in THE DAWNING, a recent Lawson/TVS
produced feature film starring Anthony Hopkins, Jean Simmonds, Trevor Howard and Rebecca Pigeon.
But he has also collaborated with a diverse range of talented songwriters, by writing lyrics
for Jonathan Butler and music for the lyricist Don Black, and although perhaps perceived as a
"commercial writer", obviously his less commercial work has inevitably been less brought to the
attention of the public! Even so, his musical SMIKE, which was written for the school where he
used to teach, has nevertheless gone on to become a mini-classic with schools and drama
societies all over the world and been performed over six thousand times.
As well as writing the music for the fifth series of HOWARD'S WAY this year, Simon is just finishing
the music for a new BBC 1 documentary to be screened in the Autumn of 1989. The Simon May Orchestra
is also signed to Andrew Lloyd-Webber's record company, "Really Useful Records" in partnership
with Polygram."
Simon Haseley: Interstate (1985) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0009 "Optimistic modern orchestral themes, with commercial lengths played by the International Television Orchestra, composed by Simon Haseley"
My comment: Good. Unstructured tracks ("vocal identification, for ease of selection..."). 7/10
P. Westwood: Night Cruisin' (1985) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0003 "A selection of up to date pieces for small group and brass, played by UNIT 9"
My comment: Nice easy listening. Flaws: Dated + irritating drums. Merits: Nice synth drums. 6-7/10
Graham Lane: Motor City (1988) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0040 "Up tempo pieces for large group featuring brass with an American flavour"
My comment: Nice and cozy. Dated. 6/10
David Bradnum,R Weston,W Burrows: Colour Drift (1990) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0112 "A collection of simple, atmospheric pieces for guitar, bass, flute and keyboard in the new age style, with commercial lengths"
My comment: Shapeless acoustic guitar. Few melodies. 4/10
Tim Souster: The New World (1985) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0008 "A selection of dramatic orchestral pieces, composed and conducted by Tim Souster, played by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra"
Karl Jenkins & Mike Ratledge: Cuts For Commercials vol. 3 (1985) DeWolfe Music DWCD 0006
My comment: 80 tracks! But the cheesiest music I have ever heard (apart from a few OK piano themes.) 2-3/10
Jenkins & Ratledge are also known as Adiemus, with Miriam Stockley.
This CD is obviously silly by design - not due to shortcomings.
The NFL Music Library (35 LPs from the 1970s on 15 CD-Rs) (Sam Spence et al) CD-R
(bad sound quality, lacks track listings & record names)
OmniMusic (Omni Music) first 25 CDs, OM CD 1 - OM CD 25 (1980-1986)
These early Omnimusic discs are a good representation of 80s production
music at its core. They are at their best when they stay true to their own
unique style, often spearheaded by company exec/senior music producer Doug
Wood. This might be best represented by Lifestyles, in which they surpass
a lot of (better known) contemporaneous material from DeWolfe and others
in the easy listening genre. It shines in its disciplined MOR sound
arranged for a tight rhythm section, trumpet and strings (recorded in a
closet??) rather than by innovation. It's the kind of feel-good music that
can only be found on library albums. Also noteworthy are their steady
rhythmic style driven by arpeggiated synths, and some tracks on
Imagination (/Supermusic) where some more "profound" serious melodies are
allowed to explore darker harmonies (well, that's relative...)
Imagination / Supermusic OmniMusic OM CD 1 (1984, 1985)
"Part One is a brilliant collection of orchestral suites and themes by
award-winning composer John Manchester. Part Two features the big sound of
today's Hollywood extravaganzas."
From prestigious brass to melancholy. Lovely 80s feeling.
Interesting melodies, good strings, mesmerizing electric piano. A few synth tracks at the end. 8/10
Modern Times / Innovation OmniMusic OM CD 2 (1985)
Nice 80s feeling but a bit simple. Mixed synth/strings. Long live the DX-7! #4, "Techno"
echoes of Alan Silvestri's "Summer Rental" theme, but good on its own. Best:17, "Uplink". 6/10
The Winning Tradition / Synergy OmniMusic OM CD 3 (1984)
Pompous, somewhat silly, a lot of brass.
Best tracks: 8, "Modern World" + 14, "Futura" are exceptions. 6/10
Masterworks / Americana OmniMusic OM CD 4 (1984, 1985)
Classical music, authentic (and 2 pastiched tracks? 21+22).
Not the reason I collect production music, hence my low rating. 4/10
Industrial Strength / Energy OmniMusic OM CD 5 (1984, 1985)
Clicheed but nice 80s soap opera feeling, both sweet & dramatic.
A lot of trumpets, a few disco strings and some chugging arpeggiated "news strings". 7/10
Lifestyles OmniMusic OM CD 6 (1984, 1985)
Spectacular easy listening / elevator music / laid-back bossa nova!
Pretty song structure & arrangements: acoustic guitar, trumpet and a few strings.
Plus a few cheesy Police & Michael Jackson soundalikes to be ignored. 10/10
Lifestyles Vol. II OmniMusic OM CD 7 (1984, 1985)
(Greenblat, Van Eps, Sepanski, Groden, Morris, Palladino, Cotton, Styles)
Funky easy listening / bossa nova, more rhythm than vol. 1. A bit of "night feeling" i some tracks. 9/10
Best: 7, "Sand Castles" (Palladino/Wood) + 9, "Into the Night" (Van Eps)
Synchronism OmniMusic OM CD 8 (1984-1986)
(Wood, Morris, Sepanski, Manchester, Barnett, Van Eps)
Slightly uptempo melodic background music. Nice but not memorable throughout.
Best: 12, "Elapsed Time" (Van Eps). 6/10
Fusion OmniMusic OM CD 9 (1981, 1984-1986)
(Licht, Wood, Sepanski, Barnett, Manchester, Van Eps, Beaumont, Saulter)
Mood-setting electronic rhythmic music, a lot of "sparkling". Dated but okay.
Best: 6, "Linear Motion" (Barnett), some instrument choices (DX7 bell?) remind me of Paul Hardcastle. 6/10
Goldenfields / A Soft Touch OmniMusic OM CD 10 (1981)
(Wood, Rosen, Carubia, Morris, Sepanski)
"Goldenfields": Pastiches of Eric Satie and other (semi-)classicals, from calm to playful.
Not memorable though. (Somehow, Pat Metheny came to mind?)
"A Soft Touch": Relaxing, slow background music. 6-7/10
Streetnoise OmniMusic OM CD 11 (1984-1986)
(Wood, Van Eps, Manchester, Morris, Cotton, Saulter, Lamm, Sepanski, Greenblat, Kosowski)
"Typical"! Fusion flirting with pop/hip hop using sterile, dated 80s synth sounds.
Several pastiches modeled after artists ranging from Lee Ritenour to the likes of Chaka Khan and
Randy Crawford, through Jan Hammer's Miami Vice. A few tracks are significantly better produced
than the unprocessed DX-7 hacks that dominate this disc. Best: 1, "Hip Pocket". 5/10
Industrial Frontiers OmniMusic OM CD 12 (1982, 1984-1986)
(Van Eps, Wood, Beaumont, Groden, Barnett, Lamm,
Catanzaro, Sepanski, Saulter, Morris, Manchester)
Bouncy, self-confident music. Brass, strings, rhythm, predominantly electronic. 6/10
New Technologies / Tech 2000 OmniMusic OM CD 13 (1981) (Wood, Sepanski, Morris, Barnett)
"New Horizons" (1-15): Droning electronic "new age" music. Rather forgettable but might be
effective in productions. Exception: 15, "Patterns". "Technology 2000" (16-25): Synth-based
with more rhythm. Best: 15, 22 ("Research Department") + 25 ("Micro Chip"). 4/10
Patterns of Success / New Frontiers OmniMusic OM CD 14 (1981, 1982)
(Wood, Carubia, Barnett, Manchester, Sepanski)
Determined steady themes dominated by rhythm section and brass. Some disco! 8/10
Mellow / Top Brass/Short Cuts OmniMusic OM CD 15 (1986)
(Cotton, Palladino, Sepanski, Groden, Morris, Catanzaro, Styles, Taxin, Wood)
"Mellow" (1-13): laid-back easy listening jazz/fusion. Jingles 14-58 have too shrill brass. 8/10
Spotlights / Destinations OmniMusic OM CD 16 (1983, 1985)
(Barnett, Wood, Carubia, Greenblat, Van Eps, Sepanski, Saulter)
"Spotlights": Melodic, happy-go-lucky circus music & jazz (including vocals).
"Destinations": Various styles from around the world. Incl. "Follies Fantasy" (Delisle/Offenbach)
& "Luck O' The Irish" (trad). Skillfully made. Grading mostly technical. 7/10
Timeframes OmniMusic OM CD 17 (1981, 1986)
(Carubia, Wood, Barnett)
Playful pastiches of 1900s music, including ragtime, jazz, big band, boogie woogie,
rockabilly, doo-wop, march, waltz, "jive", "surf rock" "silent movie music", including vocals.
The composers (mostly Carubia) show remarkable range. Grading is technical only. 7/10
World of Tomorrow / Technicalities OmniMusic OM CD 18 (1982, 1985)
(Wood, Morris, Sepanski, Van Eps, Styles)
Unobtrusive thoughtful electronic industrial background tunes, including a few clever details.
Newer tracks 12-23 much better than 1-11. Best: 16, "Pulse Code" (Van Eps/Wood).
One track's title is "Production line" which could be applied to the whole disc. 7-8/10
Specialty OmniMusic OM CD 19 (1979, 1980, 1984)
(Saulter, Wood, Gaide)
Off-beat underscores, funny minimalistic music, from wacky to cool. Some "spy themes", some
comedy music/"circus orchestra". 16, "How High" (Wood) stands out as more laid-back. 6-7/10
Life in the Country OmniMusic OM CD 20 (1979, 1980, 1982)
(Wood, Gabis, Kosowski, Sepanski, White, Palladino)
Melodic country music of various flavors. Another stylistic stretch for the composers.
Track 4, the mellow "Meadowlark" (Wood) is just about the only exception to this toe-tapping
banjo show-off vehicle. 7-8/10
Bright & Bouncy / Grooves OmniMusic OM CD 21 (1981)
(Morris, Rensing, Wood, Sepanski, Saulter, Rosen, Carubia)
Bright & Bouncy (1-15): Childish, humorous, silly tunes. Grooves (17-30): Groovy, time-stamped tunes.
7 ("Playtime"), 16 ("Breezy") = easy listening. 17, "Mr Cool" =Funky synth
Best: 21, "Gentle Groove" (Wood), 26, "Monterey" (Carubia), 30, "Flutin'" (Sepanski).
8/10 (for the "Grooves" half)
Logomagic OmniMusic OM CD 22 (1980, 1982)
Early electronic sounds make these short logos too dated to take seriously today.
The fanfares are okay. Nothing memorable though. 4/10
Blue Chips / Panorama OmniMusic OM CD 23 (1980) (Wood, 1 tr:Sepanski)
Very enjoyable melodic bouncy themes dominated by rhythm section, lead trumpet, acoustic guitar,
electric & acoustic piano, xylophone/vibraphone, strings. Think 70s cop show themes!
Also some Butch Cassidy-like Bacharachian themes. Some suspense music too. Panorama (15-26)
is just as good as Blue Chips (1-14) but more grand (add timpani and brass fanfares).
Towards the end it gets awesome. 25, "Bulletin" has best propulsion of all,
including kick-ass drum break. 10/10
(Extracurricular info: the only CD I have ever seen packed in a "SHAPE CD 2001" case)
Tension OmniMusic OM CD 24 (1983, 1987)
(Wood, Cotton, Catanzaro, Suchow, Taxin, Van Eps, Leary, Palladino, Rosen)
Mostly suspense music (more rhythm towards the end). While these tracks are effective as
uneasy underscore, they don't give up their melodic musicality.
That makes this disc more interesting than a lot of commercial movie soundtracks.
1-15 (1987): mostly based on classic 80s electric piano sound & strings.
16-31 (1983): less electronic, more rhythmic. Not too good towards the end.
Also contains Mike Hammer-style (?), Mission Impossible & Pink Panther soundalikes. 8/10
Imagination II OmniMusic OM CD 25 (1987) (Manchester)
My comment: Mostly slow rhythmic melodies in different styles.
Calm, majestic, fast, classical baroque style, contemporary electronic.
Works as underscores but the melodies are going nowhere. Some
details in the production, like synth drums, are not perfect. 6/10
Mark Russell: Action Heroes Atmosphere ATMOS-CD71 (no year printed, c:a 1997?)
"The battle of good and evil."
Pete Thomas: Mad, Bad & Jazzy Atmosphere ATMOS-CD82 (no year printed, c:a 1998?)
"R'n'B, soul, jazz, kitsch & latin... a live, fat, brassy sound - all in the best possible taste."
My comment: Raunchy, heavy, fun, snappish. Some glaring bitchy sounds here. 7/10
Various: Wallpaper (1996, material: 1977-1985) Bruton BRD43 / 222 "Light orchestral, easy listening, MOR backgrounds"
(Norman Percival, Paul Williams, Steve Gray, Max Harris, Duncan Lamont,
Andrew Jackman, James Clarke, David Snell, Jean Bouchety (Jean Bouchetty),
Keith Roberts, Alec Gould, Mike Redway, Peter Morris, John Hawkins,
Frank Fare, Colin James, Irving Martin, Brian Dee, Brian Bennett,
Cliff Hall, Simon May, Robert Folk)
(My comment: Finally - real elevator music! This is pure Muzak - high strings,
schmaltzy brass, pretty melodies, the works! Lovely arrangements, every track is
a feast for the ears. A consummate collection! I was in shock after finding this CD.
Listening to it is like an hour-long laugh out of pure euphoria. Music like this
simply does not exist in the open world of commercially released music. 10/10)

Favorites: the four Frank McDonald / Chris Rae tracks oozing of 70s coziness.
These days it might take some musical maturity to overcome the embarrassment for
enjoying elevator music such as this but once you can do it, it's highly rewarding! 9/10)

Various: Discos Like This (1970s) (1998) Rouge Music RMCD 2027 "The Disco Sound of the 70s"
(Jack Trombey, Reg Tilsley, Frank McDonald & Chris Rae)
(My comment: Triumphant instrumental disco tracks. Authentic, warm, funky. If this is a new recording
it's amazingly well done, perfectly true to the era's sound, with lots of strings & brass.
Well, aren't the composers old cats who've been around since those times anyway? 9/10)
There is also a library LP with the same name but interestingly, the track titles are different.
Amphonic library LPs from 1970-1980:
These Amphonic LPs were custom mastered to CD from the original studio
masters by the rights holders for a collector. It cost a fortune and the
quality is exquisite. Thus, it is not merely a recording of the LPs.
(Although the masters were actually on LPs as well, believe it or not!)
Annoyingly, a few tracks are actually from MP3s. It was apparently
the Syd Dale music house admins who made this mistake and this
is still AFAIK the only/"best" existing version out there.
(My comment for these Amphonics in general:
Big band with thick layers of brass, strings & flute.
Warm, embracing, nostalgic melodies.
Like a faded postcard from times gone by. 9-10/10)

Best: 3. "Innovations". 7/10)
Keith Mansfield: The Video Connection (1984) KPM 16 CD "Themes and underscores echoing current advances in information technology."
One tune by Richard Elen
(My comment: Blip-blop-ish melodic pure early synth music, dated

somewhat cliched. Part 1 subtle/abstract, part 2 more concrete,
militaristic. Well made. 7-8/10)

Curtis Schwartz: Action Trax (1990) KPM 100 CD "Moving up a gear"
(My comment: At its best well made, tough, atmospheric "image creating" music,
lots of rhythm, good synth sounds. Deluxe passe-partout cover cut
as contours of a stylised javelin thrower through which rainbow mosaic
displays in fold-out, obviously influenced by Tangerine Dream's
"Optical Race" cover. 8/10)

"A collection of creative musical images"
Booklet has a composer biography:
Environments is a collection of 13 pieces providing evocative images through a fusion of
original effects and music. In each case the aim was not just to produce a typical
atmospheric background but to create tracks with depth, vibrancy and of filmic quality.
the titles of the tracks represent the environments depicted.
the sound effects, recorded by Julian Scott, have been chosen from an original collection compiled
over the past fifteen years. The scores, created over two years have been realised with
orchestral sounds, soloists, world instruments and unique samples and rhythms.
Environments is Julian Scott's first CD for de Wolfe Music. Having worked at BBC Radio
where he developed the sound/music resource Imagination, he went on to conentrate on composition,
and as a result developed his own sound effects library - Sound Affects, which is now one of the
largest privately owned libraries in England. His current projects include: The Troop - Cinemascope,
Nannies From Hell and We Can Work It Out - ITV alongside the film score for Big Dreams And Paper Planes.

James Clarke: Waterland (1989) Bruton BRC13/9CD "Visions, daydreams, and reflections in a neutral style"
(My comment: Tranquil, relaxing, monotone music.
Guitar+flute+string pads+bells. Few melodic tracks:
16. "Reminising", 27. "Warm Welcome". Nice bell/el.piano sound
in 4,5,7,12. James Clarke made some truly superb easy listening
music found on "Wallpaper". 6/10)
Ray Russell: Drama Bruton Music BRJ135 / 108 (1991)
"A collection of suites suitable for Drama and Documentary application"
My comment: 45 tracks divided into 6 suites:
"The Enchanted Forest": a minimalistic orchestral work dominated by woodwinds.
Modern, abstract and atonal, with melodic hints. Inaccessible and mysterious.
"Refugees" adds some contemporary sounds to the picture. Tense, thought-provoking scenes.
"Night People": slick, contemporary TV suspense music, a bit jazzy but with a feeling of uncertainty.
"Environment" contains more lush, mostly electronic atmospheres.
"Space Warriors" is still mysterious and electronic but more dramatic and relentless.
"Melodrama" is the most concrete and lighthearted section. Thoughtful and mysterious
but also with a number of more accessible uptempo pieces with less substance.
Conclusion: Unusually thoughtful and sophisticated, not just another hack work.
Well produced. Best: 7, "A Tactical Retreat". 7/10
Minimalist 2 (1998) (David Arnold, Paul Hart, David Snell) Bruton Music BRP19 / 304
"An amazing resource for contemporary modern minimalist music.
Optimistic tramping strings, ethereal voices, elegant melodies
with chordal support and weaving musical textures featuring the
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. A sequel to Minimalist 1 BRP18/303"
My comment: As described. Somber, serious music focused on string orchestra
and woodwinds, that has a certain freshness to it. High quality. 8/10
Booklet has composer biographies:
PAUL HART, born 1954, lived and grew up in Ilford. He studied Piano,
Violin and composition at the Royal College of Music, first as a junior
exhibitor and later full-time. Having developed an early interest in jazz
music he left college in 1973 and about a year later started working as
piano accompanist (and sometimes jazz violinist) to Cleo Laine and John
Dankworth, an association which was to last into the early eighties and
take him around the globe many times.
During this period he met his business partner-to-be Joe Campbell, and
in 1979 formed a company called Joe & Co Music specifically to write music
for adverts. Thousands of films and hundreds of awards later, the company
is still regarded as one of the foremost in the world in this field.
In 1981 Paul renewed a friendship with David Arnold, whom he had known
at college, and went on to write, amongst other things, a host of Radio
I.D. packages including "Classic FM" and many television themes including
"Big Breakfast" and "Live and Kicking".
Paul Hart's works include many large scale jazz and orchestral pieces
including a guitar concerto written for John Williams and NYJO, a violin
concerto, a piano concerto, numerous chamber works, a set of variations
for the "London Brass Ensemble" and more recently a Concertina for
Percussion composed especially for Evelyn Glennie which made its World
debut at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
DAVID ARNOLD was educated at the Royal College of Music where he was
awarded a foundation scholarship. On graduation he accepted a principal
position with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and was also appointed
music professor at the Guildhall School of Music.
In the early eighties the tremendous success of his music production
company forced him to relinquish these positions in order to concentrate
full time on composing and conducting. Currently David produces
identification themes for Classic FM as well as the majority of the BBC's
local Radio networks. His television titles include Channel Four's "The
Big Breakfast" and BBC One's "Live and Kicking".
David has conducted the Royal Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, and
London Concert Orchestras and is the Associate Conductor to the Royal
Philharmonic Concert Orchestra. He also regularly conducts the BBC Concert
Orchestra in their popular programme "Friday Night is Music Night". Every
year David conducts the orchestra in the BBC's "Children in Need" seven
hour live TV programme.
Internationally David records in Dallas, Texas for three months each
year, and has conducted in such varied places as Japan, Italy, Monaco,
Czech Republic and Turkey.
DAVID SNELL was born in Grantham, Lincolnshire. From an early age he was
only interested in having a musical career. He commenced by becoming a
pianist, studying harmony and counterpoint. While still a teenager he was
fortunate to study the harp with the late Marie Goossens and at twenty-one
had his first professional engagement as harpist with the Bournemouth
Symphony Orchestra.
Two years later he joined the orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent
Garden. During this period he received his first composing commission for
the TV series JANE AUSTIN AND HER WORLD. After leaving the Royal Opera
House he became a freelance musician and because of his versatility was
sought after on the London session scene as a harpist and later as an
arranger, composer and conductor. His talents as an arranger and conductor
led to numerous engagements with the various BBC orchestras. Some of
David's classical compositions include DIVERTIMENTO FOR STRINGS, LYRIC
SONATA for Flute, Viola and Harp. INTRADA AND WALTZ for Violin and Harp
and various song cycles for Soprano and Harp, FANTASIE for Horn, Clarinet
and Harp, ELEGIE for Flute, Cello and Piano. His commissions for a variety
of production music houses in London, Frankfurt and Toronto cover widely
diverse styles of music, ranging from light children's music to heavy
dramatic scores used extensively in TV and radio stations throughout the
world.
Conducting film scores "to pictures" has added yet another dimension to
his career and has involved working with all the major symphony orchestras
in London, Paris (Orchestre de Paris), Munich (Munich Symphony Orchestra),
Madrid (RTE Orchestra).

Zomba Enhanced CD Sampler (Macintosh+Windows CD-ROM) (1998)
My comment: Rubbish, this multimedia concoction looks more like a toy than something
useable. Even worse, it's slooow and jerky. Better browse their website instead.
The CD is obviously only meant as a brief introduction to the libraries and nothing more.
Anyway - the CD covers the Zomba owned labels: Bruton Music, Chappell Recorded Music Library,
FirstCom, Hollywood Film Music Library & Just Jingles. The total amount of data on the disc is
a mere 29 MB so obviously there aren't a lot of soundclips. (And they don't even work for me.)

Porno soundtracks:
(Yeah, believe it or not, these were commercially released.
The music is as expected, only skin-deep.
However, anyone looking for "romantic music" should look elsewhere
as the themes are not memorable at all.
For example, you could check out David Michael Frank's "A Will of Their Own" instead,
for some classy sweeping romantic strings...)

Lee Holdridge, Bill Conti, Mike Post, Pete Carpenter,
Laurence Rosenthal, Larry Carlton, Sylvester Levay,
Randy Edelman, Merl Saunders, Dominic Frontiere,
Joe Harnell, Dennis McCarthy...
Note: Lee Holdridge's fantastic Moonlighting theme (which is here
in its original version!) can be made into an instrumental version
by combining the left & right channels negatively with "vocal cut"
in audio programs like CoolEdit, since the instruments &
Al Jarreau's vocals are mixed the way they are! Quite interesting.

W. G. Snuffy Walden, Timothy W. Truman, Brad Fiedel,

Tube Tunes vol 2 - the '70s & '80s (Rhino Records 1995)
- original (mostly album) versions of TV themes:
John Sebastian: Welcome Back, Rhythm Heritage: Theme from S.W.A.T.,
Henry Mancini (rerecording): Theme from Charlie's Angels (Jack Elliott & Allyn Ferguson),
Jack Jones: Love Boat theme, David Cassidy: Hard Times (Hard Crimes),
Maureen McGovern: Different Worlds, Mike Post: Theme from Magnum PI,
Andrew Gold: Thank You For Being A Friend, Gary Portnoy: Everytime I Turn Around, etc.
Tube Tunes vol 3 - the '80s (Rhino Records 1995)
- original (mostly album) versions of TV themes:
Steve Carlisle (Tom Wells, Hugh Wilson): WKRP In Cincinnati, Bill Conti: Dynasty,
Joey Scarbury (Mike Post): Theme from "The Greatest American Hero" (Believe It Or Not),
Mike Post feat. Larry Carlton: Theme from Hill Street Blues, Johnny Mathis & Deniece Williams: Without Us,
Rik Howard & Bob Wirth: Silver Spoons, Gary Portnoy: Cheers (Where Everybody Knows Your Name),
Jan Hammer: Miami Vice theme, Larry Weiss: Brand New Life, Stewart Copeland: The Equalizer busy equalizing,
Steve Dorff & Friends (B. J. Thomas & Dusty Springfield): As Long As We Got Each Other,
Dionne Warwick: Love Boat theme, etc.
(MY COMMENT for the above two CDs: as far as I know, the only CDs to feature
Mike Post's LP / vinyl single versions of some of his legendary TV themes.
Hill Street Blues and Greatest American Hero are real treats faithful to the
original acoustic studio sessions, but for the Magnum PI theme, Post couldn't resist
throwing out his trademark brass & string section in favor of the passing sound of the
times, so here we get the same cheesy synth strings we hear on all those re-recordings!
Albeit with a touch of Post's own magic fingers. Furthermore the theme is
rearranged, annoyingly skipping a beat which further hampers it. The same goes for
Bill Conti's Dynasty single, which is a monophonic, index-finger keyboard salute
to Vangelis's Chariots of Fire, with pop on top. Magnum PI is a
lifelong search for me. I will not be satisfied with my TV recordings!
I will not be satisfied with my TV recordings!!
(Note: original versions of Post's themes (except Magnum PI) are on
TVT Records's TV's Greatest Hits vol 3 (70s & 80s) and the
MTM TV 25th Anniversary promo CD, as is the WKRP theme and others.
